Every Friday night in Hanapepe, Kauai, there is an arts festival called Hanapepe Art Night, and I had so much fun being a part of it as an author with Talk Story Bookstore! Talk Story Bookstore is the westernmost bookstore in the United States, and the only bookstore in Kauai. Being in Kauai was wonderful, and it was such a treat to meet local Hawaiians, part-time residents, tourists, and another author or two while signing Indiana Bamboo and 28 Days of Neon. It was wonderful to have some of my family there to enjoy it, too.

My fellow panelists were Laurel Peterson, Norwalk’s former Poet Laureate who writes mysteries on the side, Marla Sterling, a wonderful writer and poet, and Bette Bono, the novelist and short story writer, who conceived of and coordinated the panel. Who would have dreamed a year ago when everything closed down that things would become so difficult for so many people? Until this fall, when I began teaching in person, I was teaching my college students the same way many of you have been going to school— on Zoom! I liked not going out in the freezing-cold winter, but not as much as I missed seeing my students in person, just as all of your teachers miss you whenever you are learning from home!

The good news is that I’ve been doing virtual Indiana Bamboo readings and workshops, and it is so much fun to see you wonderful readers again. I’m looking forward to seeing you in person, but until then, you can contact me through my website for some Indiana Bamboo virtual fun!

Stay safe, everyone, and keep wearing those adorable masks whenever we’re supposed to! (My favorite mask is black with pink flamingos. I wear it over my medical mask sometimes. What’s yours?)

The Back to School Shop is an annual one-day community event in Stamford organized to provide new school clothes and supplies at no charge to economically disadvantaged elementary school children. Each child selects his or her own items in a department store environment set up just for that day. Through the generosity of Back to School Shop donors, each child also chooses a grade-level appropriate book to take home. I was so touched that Indiana Bamboo was one of their choices this year.
